About Magnesia

The Prefecture of Magnesia is quite significant. The rich mythological tradition, the long history, the unique beauties and the activities it offers, make Magnesia an earthly paradise that every traveler should visit. Volos, the metropolitan city of Magnesia offers moments of complete relaxation, as and live nights at the bars all over the city! Visit the mountainous and coastal settlements of Pelion in order to justify gods for choosing the Pelion mountains as their summer residence! Pelion is ideal for all year round vacation. You can try swimming at the blue waters of the Pagasetic gulf, horsing at the mount Pelion paths, or ski at the ski center in Agriolefkes. The verdurous Northern Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos) are popular summer destination and attract thousands of tourists every year. Magnesia Prefecture belongs to the periphery of Thessaly. Northwestwards Magnesia borders with Larissa prefecture, southwestwards with Fthiotida, eastwards it is washed by the Aegean Sea and southwards by the Pagasetic Gulf. Magnesia has always been significant in our country¢s history from ancient times to modern days. According to mythology Pelion mountains are the homeland of the mythic centaurs, the place where Peleus, father of Achilles, married the sea-nymph Thetis. Volos in mythology was the ancient town of Iolkos, where Jason with the vessel Argo left to Colchis in order to find the golden fleece. The word Magnesia derives from the tribe name Magnetes. The significant findings in Sesklo, Dimini, Almyros, etc, reveal that Magnesia was first settled during the Neolithic Age. Significant archaeological sites, historical monasteries and churches, traditional villages of great architecture, developed in tourism settlements and the modern city of Volos, are some of the places that impress visitors.
