Konitsa
About Konitsa
The town of Konitsa is built on the lush slopes of Trapezitsa, in the Tymfi mountain range, and is located 43 km from the city of Ioannina. Konitsa has always been an administrative center for the surrounding region. During the Ottoman period, it was an important commercial hub. The prosperity of that era is still visible today in the impressive Ottoman monuments that remain in good condition. Konitsa was liberated from Ottoman rule on February 24, 1913. During 1940-41, it suffered significant destruction by the Italian occupiers. Today, it is a developing area of Epirus and serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name. Due to the many natural beauties surrounding it, Konitsa attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year. In the Konitsa plain, the Sarantaporos, Aoos, and Voidomatis rivers converge. The region is bordered by the Grammo mountains to the north, Smolikas to the east, Gamila to the south, and Nemertsika and Kamenik to the west. Plains, mountains, rivers, gorges, and rich vegetation cover the wider area, creating a unique landscape. The exceptional ecosystem of the region is protected by the Vikos-Aoos National Park and offers numerous opportunities for ecotourism activities.
