About Pogoniani
The village of Pogoniani is the main settlement of the Pogoni region. It is located in the northwest of the Ioannina prefecture, 86 km from the city of Ioannina. This remote area preserves the traditional Epirus architecture, with buildings that reflect the region¢s rich cultural heritage. Pogoniani is built at an altitude of 750 meters, near the picturesque town of Delfinaki, and features the famous Church of the Virgin Mary at the center of the village. The village has a rich history. During the Ottoman period, it served as the administrative center of the Avlona district and the seat of the bishopric until 1863. Pogoniani was also an important commercial center in the past, as evidenced by the well-preserved historic buildings still standing today. While visiting Pogoniani, it is worth exploring the Pogoni-Deropoli Folklore Museum and the Church of Saint Nicholas, dating back to 1873, with its exquisite carved wooden iconostasis. The surrounding dense forests, attracting both hunters and nature enthusiasts, offer perfect opportunities for walks in the beautiful landscape. In the Gormos Valley, archaeological excavations have revealed findings dating back to prehistoric times, highlighting the area¢s long and fascinating history.
