About Thesprotia

Thesprotia prefecture is one of the four prefectures of Epirus, distinguishes for its unique natural beauties as and its long and eventful history. Eastwards, Thesprotia borders with the prefecture of Ioannina, southwards with Preveza, while westwards the Ionian Sea washes it. Capital of the prefecture is Igoumenitsa, the most important, nodal port of epirotic Greece, as it connects it with Europe. Igoumenitsa has coastal navigation with Corfu, Paxoi, Patra and the ports of Italy, like Bari, Printezi, Venice and Angona. The region is inhabited since prehistoric times. Mythology there met with history creating this unique identity of Thesprotia. According to ancient writers, Thesprotia is the birthplace of Hellenism, as its inhabitants are considered descendants of Hellin's parents, Defkalion and Pyrra. The Greeks left Thesprotia and went to Thessaly, Fthia and the rest of Greece. And if sometimes myth covers the truth, the historic sources and archaeological findings corroborate the important and determinative role of Thesprotia during the route of Greek history. Worth mentioning are great towns like, Ella, Efyra, Toroni, Titani, Fatoni, etc. Here, we meet two very important regions in Greece. The oracle (nekromandio) and river Aherondas, through which Death lead dead people's souls to his world. Very impressive is the region of the narrow and imposing canyon created amongst the mountains of Paramythia and Souli, known as "Stena of Aherondas". There are legends and myths about this region, a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors who want to see in person this earthly paradise.
