About Nostimo
Nostimo is one of the oldest villages in the Kastoria region. It is located in the southwestern part of the prefecture, 27 km from the regional capital. Built at an altitude of 950 meters, it is situated in a naturally endowed area of exceptional beauty. The village attracts the interest of visitors to Kastoria due to a rare natural attraction found in the area: the fossilized forest, which was accidentally discovered in 1935. Specifically, during lignite mining operations in the region, hundreds of animal and marine fossils were brought to light. These fossils are estimated to originate from the Tethys Sea, which covered the Mediterranean region around 200 million years ago! The fossilized forest is estimated to be 15-20 million years old, and according to geological studies, it once covered the entire area of the village. It is believed that tropical plants also grew in the forest. Among the discoveries are many tree trunks over 10 meters tall, which impress every visitor. The fossils from Nostimo¢s forest are exhibited in the local Primary School, and it is well worth visiting, as these rare exhibits provide valuable insights into the region¢s distant past. The exhibition includes fossils of animals, corals, sea urchins, shellfish, and bones of sharks and whales. Special attention is given to the fossilized tree trunks. A dedicated space is soon expected to be prepared to host the full exhibition of fossils discovered in the forest.
