About Alistrati

Alistrati is located in the opening between two mountainous ranges, Mount Menoikio and Mount Pangaio. It was most likely built in more recent times and later developed into a small town due to its fertile land and strategic location, which allowed it to play an important role as a commercial transit hub between Serres, Thessaloniki, Drama, and Kavala. Its economic prosperity was based on the production of tobacco, cotton, grains, grapes, and fine wine. Alistrati is a town in the Serres regional unit, within the province of Fyllida, and serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name. It is located in the eastern part of Serres, bordering the Drama region. It is famous for the Alistrati Cave and the Angitis River Gorge. According to the 2001 census, it has 2,764 inhabitants, making it the largest town in the province. With the 1997 "Kapodistrias" law on local government, it was elevated to a municipality, including the communities of Agiochori, Skopia, Mandilio, Lefkothea, and S.S. Angistis. It is 20 km from Drama, 52 km from Serres, and 48 km from Kavala. Built on hills and surrounded by natural pine landscapes at the foothills of Mount Menoikio, it is a very notable traditional community, one of the largest in the area.
