About Perama
The village of Perama is located 30 km from Mytilene. It is an area that has been continuously inhabited since ancient times and stands out for its natural beauty. The settlement is built on the passage (from which it takes its name) from the western to the eastern shore of the Gulf of Gera. The area also has great historical significance, as at the site of Chalatses, remains of a Classical-era settlement have been found, believed to originate from the ancient city of Iera. Additionally, the seabed contains the ruins of ancient buildings. While exploring the wider Perama area, you can swim at Marmaro Beach, the Pyrgos area, and Ftelia, the picturesque fishing village. Today, Perama is a developing seaside resort worth visiting. Historically, at the beginning of the century, Perama experienced significant economic growth, as evidenced by the industrial architecture monuments preserved in the village. Particularly impressive is the Sourlagas Tannery complex, which was the largest in the Balkans and a remarkable example of entrepreneurial ambition. It closed in the 1980s after being accused of polluting the gulf. Its abandoned buildings remain unused by the state.
