Karlovasi is the second largest town of Samos and the island¢s second port. It is located in the western part of the island, 33 km from the capital. Locals often call it Karlovasia. It consists of the settlements Neo, Mesaio, and Palio Karlovasi, as well as the Port and Ormos. It is a town with a majestic appearance and a distinctive character. In the 19th century, it was a major commercial and industrial center. It experienced economic prosperity, reflected in its imposing mansions and the now-abandoned tannery factories. During your walk through the town, you will also encounter numerous historic buildings, which act as living guardians of the past, transporting visitors to bygone eras. Apart from the well-preserved mansions that impress every visitor, you will see the Hegemonic Mansion, the Hatzigiannio building housing the library of the Mathematics School, the renovated building of the Commercial School, which hosts the Mathematics Department of the University of the Aegean, the Porfiria School now housing the primary school, and other interesting buildings. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the entire area of Karlovasi is a living monument. In the Mesaio Karlovasi settlement, the traditional island architecture of the houses is particularly striking. In Neo Karlovasi, the commercial activity of the area is concentrated. Here you will find numerous shops for gifts, souvenirs, and local products. There are also abundant options for dining and nightlife. Karlovasi is one of Samos¢ popular resort towns. It stands out for its tourist infrastructure, which is improved every season. The natural beauty of the surrounding area also attracts thousands of visitors. Enchanting beaches with pebbles or sand and clear waters offer relaxing hours for bathers. Visit Karlovasi Beach, located next to the port, known for its fine sand and small picturesque coves that give the feeling of a private beach. Another option is Potami Beach, 2 km from the town, located in a stunning area surrounded by pine trees. It is a pebble beach with crystal-clear waters. Nearby, you will also find thermal springs, ideal for the treatment of various ailments. You can also swim at the exotic Megalo Seitani Beach, surrounded by pine trees and towering cliffs, creating a magical setting.
