KITRIANI

The Church of Kitriani is one of the oldest and most important religious monuments on the island of Sifnos in the Cyclades. It is located on the small islet of Kitriani, just opposite the bay of Platis Gialos, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The church dates back to the Byzantine period and is considered one of the oldest churches in Sifnos, with origins believed to go back to the 10th century. According to tradition, the church was built on the ruins of an ancient temple, following the common practice of early Christian communities to establish churches on sites of older worship.

The architecture of Kitriani reflects the simplicity and spiritual character of the Cycladic landscape. Its whitewashed walls, blue dome, and isolated position on the rocky islet create a striking image that blends harmoniously with the sea and sky of the Aegean.

The church is closely connected with the maritime traditions of the island. For centuries, sailors and fishermen have considered Panagia Kitriani their protector, offering prayers for safe journeys and calm seas. Every year, on the feast day of the Virgin Mary, local residents and visitors gather at the church to celebrate with religious ceremonies and traditional festivities.

Access to Kitriani is usually by small boat from Platis Gialos, especially during the summer months. The short journey offers beautiful views of the coastline and the surrounding crystal-clear waters.

Today, the Church of Kitriani remains an important symbol of the religious and cultural heritage of Sifnos. Its peaceful setting and historical significance make it one of the island's most unique and memorable landmarks.
